Portland Center Stage at the Armory

128 NW 11th Avenue

Portland, OR 97209

Portland Center Stage’s theatre, The Gerding Theatre, is located in a recently renovated 1800’s Armory. This building was originally constructed in 1891 and provided local units a space to practice drill maneuvers and featured an underground shooting range. Although it was built for a military purpose, its size allowed for many community events to take place there, such as John Philip Sousa concerts, Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson speeches, and early moving picture shows. By 1928, the Fire Marshal declared that the armory was unsafe and it was then shut down. It sat unsold and unused for the rest of the 20th century, until 2002 when PCS Artistic Director Chris Coleman and Mayor Vera Katz came up with the idea to turn the armory into their new home. Opening in 2006, this newly renovated theatre is home to PCS’s mainstage season and is the first performing arts facility certified by the US Green Building Council as exceeding the requirements for designation as LEED Platinum.
