The Vermont Plays
In 2009 I had the amazing pleasure one evening to stumble upstairs to the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons to see Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation. Immediately I was captured by Annie’s ability, along with that of her longtime collaborator, director Sam Gold, to tell the precise story of what happens in that space between two human beings in those moments of silence. It is this precision that makes all the plays in this collection, which also includes The Aliens, Nocturama and Body Awareness, a fascinating look into the way we as humans live, love, and interact. She is a modern-day Chekhov with the gift to reveal profound truth in the mundane. If you don’t already know her work, you will thoroughly enjoy reading and experiencing these already classic plays.
