In 1985, a group of theatre trustees asked their own artistic directors a wonderfully provoking question: What is your vision, and what will it take to get you there? Authored by Todd London, long-time Artistic Director of New Dramatists, The Artistic Home explores this question, following a series of 13 discussions held in 1987 between artistic directors at over 100 institutional theatres across the United States. In his Foreward, Peter Zeisler (1924-2005), a founding member of the Guthrie Theater and longtime Executive Director of TCG (1972-1995), notes that “Reading The Artistic Home is like walking in on a high-powered brainstorming session that began hours before, and then leaving in the middle of it. You don’t know what came before or what will come after, but you can feel the immediate intensity of the proceedings.” An influential study on the central roll of the artist and the art in American theatre, London will explore what came after the discussions and what’s still to come in An Ideal Theatre, to be published by TCG in Spring of 2012.
