Presence of the Actor, The
First published by Atheneum Press, Joseph Chaikin’s book, The Presence of the Actor, was based on his work with Open Theatre Collective and Winter Project. Chaikin (1935-2003), originally a member of The Living Theatre, founded the Open Theatre—his studio was on West 36th Street, just a block away from TCG’s current office – to explore further the role of the actor in creating new work. Though he suffered a stroke during open-heart surgery in 1984, which left him with partial aphasia, he continued to perform and direct, most notably with Sam Shepherd. He also memorably performed the Samuel Beckett poem “What is the Word,” which the playwright-poet dedicated to him.
