PERIODICAL AND ONLINE PUBLICATIONS

American Theatre

Since its inception in 1984, American Theatre has served as a national monthly forum of news, features and opinions for the field. The magazine provides the working professional, dedicated amateur and eager theatregoer with a unique, up-to-date perspective on U.S. theatre and the people creating it. Published 10 times a year with a readership of more than 75,000, it has a subscriber base that includes all 50 states and 90 foreign countries. Its articles have been reprinted in 13 different languages and in hundreds of individual theatre programs. American Theatre's pages cover all aspects of theatre-from acting, directing, design, playwriting and developments in international theatre and related art forms, to book reviews and analyses of issues in government, management and media.

American Theatre publishes five complete playscripts each year, and in 2004-2005 it featured five new American plays: Richard Foreman's The Gods Are Pounding My Head!, Noah Haidle's Mr. Marmalade, Tracey Scott Wilson's The Story, Tracy Letts's Man from Nebraska and Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House.

Highlights during year were the special section Cultures in Peril, a compelling survey of indigenous theatre from countries around the world, including Mali, Uganda, India, Sri Lanka, Mexico and the Philippines, as well as in-depth reports on the critically acclaimed Classical Theatre of Harlem, by Carl Hancock Rux; the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's pioneering production of Macbeth, which toured to U.S. military bases with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts; and the life and work of veteran experimentalist Andre Gregory, by Todd London. There were also exclusive, up-to-the-minute interviews with such major theatre figures as acclaimed international director Peter Brook, actress Elizabeth Marvel and Pulitzer-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley.

In the annual January "Approaches to Theatre Training" issue, a special section called Advice to a Young Actor featured articles by and about such important theatre figures as F. Murray Abraham, Robert Brustein, Michael Chekhov, Olympia Dukakis, Zelda Fichandler, Marian Seldes and Douglas Turner Ward.

The magazine continued such regular features as its précis of Theatre Facts, TCG's annual survey of the finances and productivity of America's not-for-profit theatres; and the Season Preview, an annual compilation of productions, dates and directors for the coming season at theatres coast-to-coast. Each issue offered coverage of theatre events and trends, delved into pertinent issues and controversies, and provided snapshots of international theatre events in a "Global Spotlight" column. Now an annual tradition, the May/June issue previewed theatre festivals worldwide and featured articles by American artists abroad.

The content of American Theatre is also featured monthly on the TCG website, with selected articles from each newissue, including editorials by TCG executive director Ben Cameron, and "This Month on Stage," a search feature for upcoming performances at TCG member theatres. Past issues are archived on the web, and the site includes a Play Index of works published in the magazine

TCG Website

TCG's comprehensive website, www.tcg.org, plays a vital role in furthering our mission to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theatre by expanding the reach of our programs and services to our membership and the general public. The site provides breaking news in the "What's New" section; includes guidelines and applications for all our artistic grant programs; highlights the latest publications from the TCG bookstore, and archives our periodical publications and press releases. In addition to descriptions and updates on TCG programs, the education, advocacy and International Theatre Institute pages link members to important research and external resources.

The majority of TCG’s surveys—Fiscal Survey, Education Survey and Snapshot Surveys—are conducted and published online for the benefit of all members. The site now includes three searchable databases: Theatre Profiles, a compilation of season information on all TCG member theatres; Education Profiles, containing the results of our education survey; and a database listing theatre education study guides collected from member theatre’s education departments. Both Education Profiles and the Fiscal Survey have features which enable members to generate customized reports.
