American Theatre IS 25!!

In April of 1984, with a cowboy-clad Sam Shepard on the cover, the first issue of American Theatre magazine hit the stands. Its mission: to communicate and contextualize the trends and concerns of not-for-profit theatre in America.

For twenty-five years, American Theatre has celebrated the finest and most innovative theatre in America and around the world; taken you inside the most fascinating productions; explored the latest developments in every aspect of theatre; profiled the trailblazers that changed theatre with their vision and ingenuity; and published the best new plays of our times.

Join us in continuing this tradition of excellence as we charge into the next quarter century with innovations aimed at making communication more immediate and the context even more transparent.

Each issue of American Theatre is filled with colorful, full-bleed imagery, plus features, opinion, commentary, essays; nationwide production schedules; international festivals and professional appointments field-wide.

We publish five complete plays a year, accompanied by an interview with the playwright (July/August, September, December, February and April) and don’t miss our two big annual issues: the October Season Preview, forecasting the theatre season from coast-to-coast and January's Approaches to Theatre Training.
