ADVOCACY

TCG is the primary advocate for the not-for-profit professional theatre. TCG represents the theatre field in Washington, DC and nationally to provide timely information for theatres and theatre artists on federal legislation, regulations and other significant government opportunities and issues.

TCG recently participated in the 2008 Arts Advocacy Day in our own New York State Capitol. Here are some photos from that day. All our member theatres are urged to participate in Arts Advocacy day in your state capitols and in Washington, DC!

Learn more about TCG’s involvement in:

American Arts Alliance

  • As a founding member of the American Arts Alliance, TCG works together with other national performing arts service organizations to provide the field with timely information on significant government opportunities and issues. TCG theatres automatically become members of the Alliance and receive ongoing information for their grassroots advocacy efforts, timed to complement the Alliance's Washington advocacy effort.
  • Established in 1977, the American Arts Alliance is a nationwide consortium of nonprofit performing and presenting arts organizations. The mission of the Alliance is to be the principle advocate for America's professional nonprofit performing arts organizations and their publics in representing arts interests and advancing arts support before Congress and other branches of the federal government. To achieve this mission, the Alliance informs legislators and policy makers of the vital role the performing arts play in American society, and advocates the development of national policies which recognize, enhance and foster the contributions that the performing arts make to America. Member organizations include the American Symphony Orchestra League, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Dance/USA, OPERA America and Theatre Communications Group.

TCG advocates for the American theatre by providing its member theatres:

  • Membership in the American Arts Alliance including a subscription to Legislative Update, which describes recent government developments,
  • Arts-related Action Alerts with notification via fax, mail or email when prompt action is necessary,
  • Policy updates printed in the TCG Bulletin, American Theatre magazine and on the website
  • Tools and resources for advocacy including TCG's Grassroots Kit, "Political Advocacy for Your Theatre."
  • In addition, TCG writes testimony, provides witnesses for hearings and works closely with other coalitions, such as People for the American Way, Independent Sector and other groups dedicated to government support of the arts, freedom of expression and other issues affecting the arts and the not-for-profit theatre community.
