THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL, an internationally acclaimed performing arts conservatory, seeks candidates for the First Hand position. The First Hand works under the supervision of the Costume Shop Supervisor and a Draper. The successful candidate will have knowledge of industrial and home sewing machines; mastery of stitching; basic pattern-making skills; demonstrated ability of a wide range of clothing construction methods, alteration methods, and tailoring; knowledge of costume history and vocabulary; and a minimum of two years of experience in a costume shop. Candidates must be able to take direction and work without supervision. The First Hand will assist the draper and take notes in fittings; prepare mock-ups; instruct interns in basic sewing techniques; execute basic pattern-making, cut, and construct theatrical costumes.
