Assessment and evaluation are important tools for theatre education directors; they are essential to improving programming, and provide important information that illustrates the positive impact of theatre arts education on students. For the past year and a half, TCG, in consortium with ASSITEJ, the American organization of theatres for young people and children, has been working on an education initiative toward arming education directors with national models and frameworks on assessment.
TCG and ASSITEJ organized a Working Group of 10 theatre education directors to provide advice and counsel on the TEAM project. They have been generous in sharing their knowledge, expertise and time in creating these models and guiding our work. The TEAM Working Group focused on four areas of assessment: performance tasks, portfolio, observation and survey. The templates developed in each of these areas reflect effective practices to assess participant learning and engagement.
The purpose of this pre-conference is to train education directors in adapting the national models for use in their education programs as well as aligning the evaluation and assessment work with federal and state standards. Participants will learn how to use the model templates to assess the growth of students and to collect information critical to school districts, parents, theatre leadership and funders.
TEAM consultant, Robert Southworth, will lead the pre-conference training. Robert is an expert in the field of arts-in-education and assessment, and has worked nationally as a professional developer of teachers and principals using performance assessment, instructional leadership and educational research strategies. Robert has taught at Adelphi University, Bank Street College of Education and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Teachers College. He is the founder and president of the SchoolWorks Lab, a non-profit organization dedicated to school reform research, assessment and dissemination.
The pre-conference workshop is available at an additional fee beyond the conference registration. The pre-conference fee will include breakfast, lunch and all materials.
Registration for the TEAM Pre-Conference is $200 per person.
Register for both the Pre-Conference and the TCG National Conference at a discounted rate!
