2009 TCG National Conference - Pre-Conference

Washington, DC. June 3, 2009

The Shakespeare Theatre Company hosts the TCG Pre-Conference at their newly opened Sidney Harman hall. Our pre-conference offerings this year include opportunities to strengthen your own voice, make a substantial difference in the field, and become a crucial part of international conversations and artistic exchange.

ACTivate Change: Bridging Cultural Exchange and Creativity

On June 3, 2009 we’ll gather in Washington, DC to engage with national colleagues, international theatre practitioners and policy-makers as we chart the course for cultural exchange in today’s increasingly intricate world.

The new administration has begun to envision cultural exchange as an important tool to provide global leadership and greater intercultural understanding. This is a crucial time to rethink our own approach to international work and to identify the vital differences between cultural diplomacy and cultural exchange. We will exchange ideas with experts and with each other, identify new partnerships and strengthen the role of theatre in global affairs. Sessions will be geared to engage experienced international theatre practitioners and to demystify the process for those interested in exploring this work for the first time.

ACTivate Change: Advocating for Theatre Now

The new administration has shown already that it is receptive to a message about the importance of the arts and arts policy – but we have to participate in the process if we want a place in the national dialogue. It’s up to us to make our presence known and to advocate for issues that affect our art, our audiences and our livelihoods.

So let your voice be heard! Make advocacy an important part of your leadership portfolio, and join your colleagues in Washington, DC on June 3 for training and personalized visits to your Members of Congress. Get up to speed on the current status of arts appropriations and regulatory issues that affect the performing arts, and immediately put that training to work on the Hill. No one is going to stand up for theatre but ourselves – and the time to take that stand is now. We have an opportunity to influence a receptive, new administration and Congress – and we’ve set a goal of 200 representatives of theatres across the country storming the Hill on June 3. Join us!
