What is Dual Leadership: Partnering from the Inside Out?
Building on our commitment to develop a wide array of professional development programs for the field, TCG, along with partners Dance/USA, the national service organization for dance, and the Institute for Cultural Policy and Practice at Virginia Tech announce a unique program for artistic and managing leaders from theatre and dance companies to come together and build their understanding of the unique challenges involved in developing sustainable and effective dual leadership structures. This highly engaging seminar will focus on the competencies and practices required to build strong team-based leadership models that support both the artistic vision and the institutional resilience required for long term impact.
On Sunday evening, the seminar opens with each team identifying where and how they have been effective as individual leaders and as a team, what significant challenges lay ahead and the strengths they possess as a team in meeting those challenges. The following morning the faculty will lead the participants in a series of activities (presentation, discussions, exercises and reflections) that will introduce such themes as:
- building leadership as an institutional capacity
- increasing organizational cohesion and adaptability
- establishing and maintaining a culture of trust
- managing the tension between artistic vitality and organizational sustainability
On Tuesday, each team will identify and discuss ways in which they can be more effective as leaders in working with one another, with their staff, artists and boards of trustees back home in their organization.
This highly interactive seminar will place a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer learning and will focus on the unique dual leadership realities faced by the senior artistic and management leaders of not-for-profit professional theatre and dance companies.
In order to optimize learning and assure a highly participatory experience, participation will be limited to 20 artistic/managing leader teams. Each participant will receive a complete binder of course materials onsite in Philadelphia.
Back to TopWho Should Attend?
Both the artistic and executive/management leader of TCG member theatres and Dance/USA dance companies must attend as a team in order to register and agree to participate in the entire session. Also, only peer leadership teams are invited to register—in other words, executive teams who hold equal positions within their organization. No additional staff employees may attend. Senior management and entry level staff are encouraged to consider TCG's Expanding the Theatre Manager's Repertoire program as an alternative.
Although priority will be given to TCG member theatres, non-members may be able to attend if space becomes available. If you are interested in attending, contact Sheela Kangal for more information and a non-member wait-list form. The rate for non-members is $575/team.
