About the Forum


TCG’s 2005 Fall Forum, Art in the Board Room, brought together approximately 170 participants, including teams of artistic and management leaders and trustees, to provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion on governance issues. TCG's Forums give theatre leaders the chance to hear some of the most provocative thinkers in the field and to engage with their peers in an intimate and informal setting.

Fall Forums are designed to enhance board effectiveness and performance. While other years have focused on management structure and financial issues, this year’s meeting took a radically different tack. The focus was on the artistic process—a careful look at the various elements of theatrical production and the inextricable links between financial planning and artistic mission/aspiration. Board members traditionally feel comfortable in evaluating financial performance, relying on balance sheets, box office receipts, etc. Artistic evaluation—and especially evaluation of artistic leadership—is far more problematic: how do we evaluate and measure right brain activities and achievement? Are there ways that boards can begin to think differently about artistic accomplishment? Are there measurements we should consider beyond critical reviews and box office receipts? What is the role of creativity in true leadership?

The 2005 Fall Forum began in the early evening on Friday, November 11, with a cocktail reception, dinner and keynote address at the Bryant Park Grill. The Forum continued all day Saturday and concluded in the early afternoon on Sunday, November 13. Fall Forum attendance is open to staff and trustees of TCG member theatres only.
