2009 Fall Forum on Governance
Opportunity Knocks: Proactive Leadership in a "Wait and See" World
New York City, November 6–8, 2009
About the Program:
For more than twelve months the staff and trustee theatre leadership across the country worked through record-breaking economic instability and near-constant change. National debates were waged over arts' importance to communities. Some theatres closed their doors, some drastically reduced their budgets and changed their programming, while other theatres thrived in the unpredictable environment. In 2009, what did the field look like? Has the President's personal interest in the arts impacted public perception of the arts and their value? What did we need to learn, re-learn or even un-learn in order to make way for true innovation and expansion? The 2009 Fall Forum sought innovative thinking to re-invigorate leadership and decision-making approaches and to investigate some success stories in theatre stewardship. Discussion topics included: Out with the Old, Three Organizations Tackle Assumptions Head On, The Green Opportunity, Leadership in Troubled Financial Times: What Your Board Can Do Now and The Service opportunity, among others. The Fall Forum brought together approximately 176 participants.
