Nonprofit groups and the donors that support them are still licking their wounds from the stock market crash of 2008-09. What are the prospects for a continuing recovery on Wall Street? How much can an institution safely spend from its endowment? And how can 501(c)3 organizations maximize their appeal to givers? This session will range from the big picture on economic stimulus to the nitty-gritty of charitable remainder trusts.

We make decisions every day, under many circumstances.  Over time, these decisions tell the story of our artistic and organizational priorities.  During prolonged times of financial hardship, when an entire field faces making the same difficult decisions to protect the health of their organizations, how much of a toll is taken on the imagination and artistry of our artistic directors and the artists we hire to create our plays?  How much of a toll is taken on the long-term health of the art form itself?  How can we talk about this?  Is there a sense in which trustees hold the art in trust for a community as well as the institution?  Are there ways trustees can support their artistic director’s ability to balance today’s economic imperatives with tomorrow’s artistic aspirations?  Join our panel of artistic directors and trustees as they try to grapple with these thorny questions.
3:30pm - 3:45pm Coffee Break
3:45pm - 5:00pm Banishing Burnout: Surviving Crisis Mode

In our “new normal” economic climate every theatre in America is doing more with less. The challenges these times present are monumental to all aspects of our business, but specifically to our ability to attract, retain and grow our most valuable resource: the people who are the backbone of our organizations. How do we keep our staffs fired up and excited about the work of the theatre when we can’t promise a return to “normal”? Can we engage staff by ensuring they are a part of our conversation as we define ourselves in this “new normal?” Where do we find the spark of hope, and how do we flame that spark?
