Seventh Generation

The first major collection of contemporary Native American writing for the theatre, Seventh Generation: An Anthology of Native American Plays beautifully captures a modern Native American society still steeped in a rich tradition. In her epilogue, Elizabeth Theobald, Director of Public Programs at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in Connecticut notes, “If you’ve read all the plays in this compilation, you’ll notice that there are no captives or cavalrymen. These plays are written from the inside, from what the writer cares about: their families, the wounds they have suffered in their lives; they care about healing…they care about their communities.” Edited by Mimi Gisolfi D’Aponte, the volume collects seven works by playwrights representing different tribal communities —Kiowa/Delaware, Assiniboine/Nakota, Choctaw, Kuna/Rappahannock, Ojibway, Cherokee and Hawaiian/Samoan — thus weaving together the common threads of community, storytelling and spirituality with pressing, modern-day problems.
