Italian playwright, actor and political activist Dario Fo was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997 as one “who emulates the jesters of the Middle Ages in scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the downtrodden.” One of the major theatrical artists of the twentieth century, Fo, together with his wife and creative partner, Franca Rame, have been creating a theatrical form uniquely their own for more than fifty years. We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay! was originally produced in 1974 and received its American premiere in 1999 at the American Repertory Theatre in a translation by Ron Jenkins.
