Paula Vogel’s brother, Carl, invited her on a trip to Europe which she declined not knowing at the time that he was recently diagnosed as HIV positive. The memory play about that imagined journey with her brother is lovingly dedicated “To the memory of Carl—because I cannot sew.” Workshopped in 1990 at the Perseverance Theatre in Douglas, AK, The Baltimore Waltz premiered in 1992 at New York City’s now-defunct Circle Repertory Company, starring Cherry Jones, Joe Mantello and Richard Thompson under the direction of Anne Bogart. In 1998, Ms. Vogel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for How I Learned to Drive, which is currently receiving its first production in New York City since its world premiere fifteen years ago.
