International Theatre Institute
The International Theatre Institute (ITI), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) was founded in Prague in 1948 by UNESCO and the international theatre community. A world wide network, ITI aims "to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts (drama, dance, music theatre) in order to consolidate peace and solidarity between peoples, to deepen mutual understanding and increase creative co-operation between all people in the theatre arts."
ITI now includes approximately 92 ITI Centres around the world which form a clearinghouse of information and contacts among international theatre professionals; manages a network of international theatre artists and crafts people; provides programs and services for international theatre professionals.
Objectives
- To promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in the domain of the performing arts;
- To stimulate creation and increase cooperation among theatre people;
- To increase public awareness of the need to take artistic creation into consideration in the domain of Development;
- To deepen mutual understanding and contribute to the consolidation of peace and friendship between peoples;
- To join in the defence of the ideals and aims of UNESCO;
- To combat all forms of racism or social and political discrimination.
Membership
ITI now includes approximately 92 national and associate ITI Centres which form the basis of the Institute's membership. An ITI Centre is made up of professionals active in the theatre life of the country and representative of all branches of the performing arts. Its activities are conducted both on a national and international level.
