World Theatre Day

March 27, 2007

World Theatre Day was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, and is celebrated annually on March 27 by ITI Centers and the international theatre community, various national and international theatre events being organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the International Message traditionally written by a theatre personality of world stature at the invitation of the International Theatre Institute. The first such message was written by Jean Cocteau in 1962.

Director, writer, actor Robert Lepage, one of Canada's most renowned figures in performing arts, wrote this year's message.

International Travel Grants

TCG/ITI Travel Grants, funded by the Trust for Mutual Understanding, are designed to foster cultural exchange and artistic partnerships between theatre professionals in the United States and their counterparts in Russia and Eastern and Central Europe. These grants support travel in either direction between theatre artists, administrators and educators. Applicants must be either a U.S. not-for-profit theatre applying on behalf of a theatre professional(s) or an individual theatre professional(s) who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. Beginning this year, the award amount has increased to $3,000.

Designed by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and TCG, the New Generations Program-Future Collaborations awards $3,000 travel grants to theatres and theatre professionals for geographically unrestricted international travel, enabling them to share ideas and techniques and/or collaborate with their colleagues around the world. Applicants must be either a U.S. not-for-profit theatre applying on behalf of a theatre professional or an individual theatre professional who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. These travel grants will be awarded in the fall/winter and spring/summer seasons.
