More Than Mere Survival
The Future of Theatres of Color
The following report summarizes discussions held at a recent four-day Theatre Communications Group convening for twenty artistic and management leaders of theatres of color held at the Gilman Foundation's White Oak Plantation in Yulee, Florida from September 11 - 14, 2003. The meeting was made possible with generous support from the Howard Gilman Foundation and the Nathan Cummings Foundation.
Clearly, there has been much conversation about the vulnerability of theatres of color and multicultural theatres. The intent of the gathering at White Oak was to advance that conversation a step further— to come together to quantify the organizational realities facing these theatres and to identify some priority issues that would warrant the investment of time, energy and money. Participating theatres were asked to complete a financial survey, provide an organizational chart, and give thought to some specific questions that will be provided in advance. Discussion topics included issues related to capitalization and infrastructure, articulating current realities and identifying areas for change.
While TCG holds many roundtables, forums and conferences around the country, the meeting of representatives from theatres of color was a first-time event.
