Also online this month:
FIELD LETTER
In her first Field Letter, TCG's new executive director Teresa Eyring recaps her first day at the office and shares plans for her first month on the job and beyond. She also introduces a new Field Letter feature—the Question of the Month. "In addition to keeping you up to date on what's happening at TCG and in the field, I would like to use the Field Letter as an opportunity to hear from you on specific topic areas that affect you in your work. Each month, I will pose a question and request that you consider it individually, in a staff or board meeting or with your students. If you have a moment and can write back to me briefly with your thoughts, I will compile a summary to share with everyone in subsequent field letters."

TCG National Conference/ Pre-Conference Focuses on Education Assessment Models
Theatre educators, register now for the TCG Pre-Conference, Building a National TEAM: Theatre Education Assessment Models! TCG, in consortium with ASSITEJ/USA, has been working on an education initiative to arm education directors with national models and frameworks on assessment. Assessment tools are essential to improving programming, and the results provide important information about the positive impact of theatre arts education on students.
The purpose of this pre-conference is to train education directors in adapting national models for use in their own education programs and to align their evaluation and assessment of work with federal and state standards. Participants will learn how to use the model templates to assess the growth of their students and to collect information critical to school districts, parents, theatre leadership and funders.
TEAM consultant Robert Southworth will lead the pre-conference training. Robert is an expert in the field of arts-in-education and assessment, and has worked nationally as a professional developer of teachers and principals using performance assessment, instructional leadership and educational research strategies.
Action: The Pre-Conference day is Wednesday, June 6, from 8:30am to 5:00pm and will be held at Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul, MN. Visit the Events section of the website for more information or to register for both the Pre-Conference and the TCG National Conference. Discounts apply for those registering for both events.
Save the Date! Expanding the Theatre Manager's Repertoire: August 5–7
For the tenth consecutive year, TCG and Target Corporation are pleased to offer Expanding the Theatre Manager's Repertoire, our popular and invaluable human resources training program. The program will be held August 5–7 in San Francisco, California. Building on Target's own human resources training methods, which exemplify the best practices in the corporate sector, this training is specifically tailored for theatre managers.
Past attendees will notice that the program has now expanded to encompass a three-day period, in response to participant feedback. The program will now begin on Sunday in the late afternoon and will end on Tuesday afternoon, which will provide a more relaxed pace to the training and allow participants to catch earlier flights home after the final session.
Action: Visit the Events section of the website for more information. Invitations will be sent via email to TCG Member Theatres later this month, and registration forms will be available online soon.
Free Night of Theater to return on October 18!
Free Night of Theater 2007 will continue its national expansion plans through a process of targeted program growth. TCG has confirmed the participation of the major theatre centers of Chicago and Minneapolis, and will also selectively introduce Free Night into regions of the country currently not represented in the program. Free Night expansion plans will be focused in, but not limited to, the southeast, southwest, midwest and mountain states.
TCG continues to work closely with APASO organizations to produce Free Night locally and will also introduce regional, state and city arts councils as management partners in 2007. We plan to present Free Night in up to 30 communities (increased from 16 in 2006), with the goal to expand individual theatre participation to over 750 theatres, that will in turn offer as many as 100,000 free tickets nationally.
Action: Visit the Events section of the website for the latest updates on Free Night of Theater 2007 program guidelines and participation criteria.

Wanted: Electronic Human Resources Documents for TCG's Topical Files
As a service for member theatres, TCG maintains electronic resource files for inquiries about performance reviews, job descriptions, organizational structure, trustee evaluation, software packages and more. Some of our most useful and most requested files contain employee handbooks, reviews, job descriptions and contracts that are submitted by member theatres to be used as a resource by other member theatres.
All member theatres are encouraged to send us any electronic human resources-related documents they utilize for inclusion in these files. We can remove any language that identifies your theatre, if you wish to contribute anonymously. In particular, we are looking to expand our collection of employment contracts for full-time and management-level staff, but we gladly welcome any and all submissions. Also, if you have worked with a consultant that you particularly would recommend, please forward their information as well.
Action: If you have any documents that you would like to contribute to our files, please email them as an attachment (Microsoft Word preferred) to Jason Schroeder.
Update Your Staff Contacts with TCG
TCG sends email notification of the TCG Bulletin and Field Letter directly to general managers, education directors, business managers, marketing directors, PR directors, literary managers, dramaturgs, development directors and associate artistic directors at TCG member theatres. We do this in order to keep staff informed of the activities and developments of the not-for-profit theatre field, to deepen staff knowledge of TCG and to increase participation in our programs. Many of these senior staff already participate in TCG programs and have sent TCG their email addresses. However, we are far from a complete list. We strongly encourage you to send us email contacts for all senior staff at your theatre, and to inform us of any staff changes when they occur.
Action: To receive notification of the TCG Bulletin and Field Letter by email or to inform TCG of staff changes at your theatre, contact Kelly Haydon.
TCG Requests Production Posters
TCG is requesting posters from your theatre's current season. We prominently display members' posters in our office, which not only creates a lively and attractive work environment but also helps us showcase the full diversity of our membership to the artists, funders, government leaders, theatre administrators and board members who visit TCG. We also remind you to send posters to your federal, state and local legislators. They often like to display their constituents' posters in their offices.
Action: Mail posters to Demosthenes Chrysan, TCG, 520 Eighth Avenue, 24th Floor, New York, NY 10018-4156, as well as your legislators.

Arts Advocacy Day Recap
Robert MacNeil delivered the 20th Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture, which kicked off Arts Advocacy Day events in Washington, DC, on March 12. Arts advocacy training workshops were the focus of the events on March 12, and there were legislative issue briefings on NEA appropriations, arts education funding, charitable tax incentives, improving the visa process for international artists and funding for cultural exchange.
March 13 was the day for Hill visits. Joining TCG staff in Washington, DC, were Ben Moore, managing director of Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Rachel Kraft, executive director of Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago, both of whom also serve on the TCG board of directors. Lisa Naparstek Green, chairman of Lookingglass' board and a member of TCG's National Council for the American Theatre, also joined the delegation and Margaret McKowen, managing director, and Lissa Cobetto, business manager of the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, WV, rounded out our advocacy team. The TCG delegation met with Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA), Congressman Danny Davis (D-IL) and Congressman Norm Dicks (D-WA), as well as arts staffers in the offices of Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV).
Members of Congress were urged to support an increase in the NEA's appropriation and arts education funding within the U.S. Department of Education. Congress was also asked to support legislation that will reduce the total processing times for O and P visa petitions filed by not-for-profit arts organizations to a maximum of 45 days, to increase funding for cultural exchange through the State Department and to reject the proposed funding cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the FY 08 appropriations bill. Finally, Members of Congress were urged to support increased tax incentives for charitable giving—such as extending the IRA Rollover provision.
Action: If you plan to be in Washington, DC, and would like assistance in setting up an appointment to meet with your Senator or member of Congress, please contact Laurie Baskin, director of government & education programs. District meetings are equally effective.
ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UNITED STATES

The Association of Performing Arts Presenters' Ensemble Theatre Initiative was designed to fund collaborative projects between ensemble theatres, resident theatres and presenters to build the knowledge and capacity of the work of ensemble theatres and expand the reach of their work to audiences nationwide. In addition, artistic, production, education, publicity or marketing staff at ensemble theatre companies are eligible for funds to visit a potential host theatre or arts presenter in order to effectively prepare for an engagement at least 6–12 months in advance. Funds are also available to artistic directors of regional theatres for travel to attend the Under the Radar Festival and Symposium scheduled for Arts Presenters' Annual Conference in New York in January 2008.

Request for Research
Americans for the Arts is collecting any and all research about arts education conducted by state and local arts agencies. Research can encompass arts education in any setting with all types of participants. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodology studies are all needed. If your organization has any research or evaluation studies on arts education in your service area, Americans for the Arts would like to catalogue and publicize it. Americans for the Arts is particularly interested in program evaluation reports and studies.
The research will be used in three capacities:
- To support arts education advocacy relating to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act reauthorization. The federal government is currently collecting information about the impact of NCLB. Americans for the Arts is working to collect and disseminate research, particularly quantitative studies on the impact of NCLB on instructional time in arts education. All arts education research will be appreciated in this effort.
- To catalogue the research as models and sources of information in perpetuity. Americans for the Arts hosts the National Arts Policy Database (NAPD), a free, public, national database that can be added to by the public. This database collects research, news, program profiles and sample documents to connect members of the field to each others work.
- To examine the capacity for research and evaluation in the field. As expectations grow for arts education providers and partners, Americans for the Arts would like to support the field with developed resources to support providers in this area of field practice.
Americans for the Arts would like to leverage your work to improve the federal authorizing environment for arts education. We would also like to secure a place for your work—into the future through the NAPD catalogue and in your current efforts with capacity building information.
Action: The submission deadline is April 11. To submit research or request more information, please send an email to artseducation@artsusa.org. Hard copies of research can be mailed to: Arts Education Research, Americans for the Arts, 1000 Vermont Ave NW, 6th Floor; Washington, DC 20005. Visit the Americans for the Arts website for more information on arts education and No Child Left Behind, or to access the National Arts Policy Database.
Statement by Education Secretary Margaret Spellings on Arts Advocacy Day
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings made the following statement on the celebration of 2007 Arts Advocacy Day:
"I am pleased to join the many artists, administrators, arts educators, parents and others in celebrating 2007 Arts Advocacy Day. The No Child Left Behind Act recognizes the important role that arts have in our schools for a well-rounded education. The arts are a unique tool to stimulate and enrich learning. Not only do the arts encourage our children's imagination and creativity, but they can also teach lessons of history, math and other subjects in a more memorable and profound way. The arts also, as President George W. Bush has said, "…allow us to explore new worlds and to view life from another perspective," a critically important skill for today's global economy. Our education system is improving because of the concerns and involvement of so many who advocate for the arts. Leaders in states and local communities can and should ensure that the arts remain part of every student's education."
Action: Visit the U.S. Department of Education website to view a press release on this statement.
