Important Changes to Metrics for Not-for-Profit Evaluations

Guidestar, Charity Navigator, Philanthropedia and GiveWell recently announced plans to phase out the use of overhead expense ratios in not-for-profit evaluation. Ken Berger, CEO of of Charity Navigator, proposed the following dimensions to evaluate the effectiveness of a not-for-profit: financial health, accountability and outcomes. Instead of using a ratio of programmatic costs to administrative and fundraising costs, Charity Navigator will embed all three dimensions into their weighted star system.
