Jitney

August Wilson; Foreword by Ishmael Reed

TCG

Set in the Hill District of Pittsburgh in 1977.

"I don’t know where August got his Blues from. He says he listened to records. You can listen to all the records you wish, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll be successful in getting the Blues down on paper. Wilson has to rank with Langston Hughes and Ernest Gaines as a writer—his ear was so good that his characters’ words could be set to music. Shealy’s monologue in the first scene of Jitney is an example. Not only did August excel stylistically in bringing the Blues to paper, but all of the issues of the Blues are presented in this play as well."—Ishmael Reed

"Jitney could be described as just a lot of men sitting around talking. But the talk has such varied range and musicality, and it is rendered with such stylish detail, that a complete urban symphony emerges." —Ben Brantley, New York Times
