Cardenio

William Shakespeare and John Fletcher, Edited by Gregory Doran

Nick Hern Books

Shakespeare’s famous ‘lost play’ was restored to life by RSC Chief Associate Greg Doran for the re-opening of the Swan Theatre. Based on an episode in Don Quixote, the play Cardenio has disappeared but it forms the basis of an 18th century piece, The Double Falsehood, by Lewis Theobald. By excising Theobald’s additions and inserting passages from contemporary Spanish plays, Greg Doran has come up with a text which is the nearest to the play that Shakespeare and Fletcher originally wrote.

'an extraordinary and theatrically powerful piece... the play works beautifully'—Guardian
