"[Never Swim Alone] a perfectly self-contained and unabashedly artificial work... [MacIvor] is a writer with an angular sense of humour and an uncommon knack for probing basic elements and truths of human behaviour." —Vit Wagner, Toronto Star
"Ingenious, whimsical, a lyrical lunacy in the writing, This Is A Play is a theatre experience comedy you might associate with Tom Stoppard." —Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail
Described by Carol Bolt as “a world full of poetry and ceremony and mystery, where questions can be asked if not answered,” Never Swim Alone and This is a Play are two of Daniel MacIvor's most enduring plays.
A funny, satirical story, Never Swim Alone is about Frank and Bill, two egotistical men locked in a ruthless competition of one-upmanship for seemingly no reason. A hilarious metaplay, This Is A Play follows three actors who, while performing, reveal their own thoughts and motivations as they struggle through crazy stage directions and an unoriginal musical score.
Daniel MacIvor has written many plays, including See Bob Run, Never Swim Alone, In On It, A Beautiful View, His Greatness, and with Daniel Brooks created a series of solo shows that have toured extensively internationally. Daniel received the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama for his collection of plays I Still Love You and he was awarded the prestigious Siminovitch Prize. He is also the recipient of the New York Obie Award and a GLAAD Award. He is currently developing a new play for Tarragon Theatre called New Magic Valley Fun Town and working on the libretto for Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian, commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company.
