Blue Star Theatres and THEATREWORKS Present a Christmas Carol-Themed Event for Military Families

THEATREWORKS offered various activities for military families in connection with its production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, including an introductory teatime in the theatre lobby; creative, intergenerational family workshops; and quirky lectures on themes related to the play. Eighty free tickets to the 4:00 p.m. performance were available to participating families. The afternoon concluded with a post-show gathering, where guests enjoyed mulled wine, cider, and scones.

Blue Star Theatres Presents Workshops and Tours of Seattle Children’s Theatre, Plus Tickets to The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

In this event for military families, Seattle Children’s Theatre offered workshops and tours in its theatre, as well as 100 free tickets to the evening’s performance of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, on a first-come first-serve basis, with subsequent tickets for that evening’s show offered to military families at 50% off the regular price. Free pizza for the entire audience followed the 5:30 p.m. performance.

Blue Star Theatres and Cape Fear Regional Theatre Shake It Up With Shakespeare

Cape Fear Regional Theatre invited children of military and veteran families to rehearse and perform, with CFRT artists, scenes from Shakespeare’s Henry V, complete with props, costumes, lights, and music. Attendees were invited to come in military costume to enhance their characters and the experience. Families also received discounted tickets for that evening’s performance of Henry V.

Blue Star Theatres and La Jolla Playhouse Present A Halloween Day in the Theatre – A Mystery Scavenger Hunt

At La Jolla Playhouse, children and their families embarked on an interactive Halloween quest in search of Creativity, which had gone missing. Participants gathered clues and enjoyed hands-on craft-making activities and storytelling as they put together their own Creative Creatures. A reception with a photo booth followed the performance.

This event included remarks by Steven Woolf, Artistic Director of the Repertory Theatre of St Louis; Teresa Eyring, Executive Director of Theatre Communications Group; Lieutenant Colonel David Jones, U.S. Army; and Liz Jones, Program Administration Fellow of Blue Star Families. The event featured a free performance of Goldilocks, with a book by Sarah Brandt, music and lyrics by Neal Richardson, and direction by Larry Schmidt.

Boston Children’s Theatre and Blue Star Theatres Present Halloween Drama Workshop

This event for military families included an interactive workshop featuring Mark Kimball Moulton’s Halloween story Twisted Sisters. Children played Halloween theatre games, read Twisted Sisters, and learned to perform the piece with friends and family.

Blue Star Theatres Features Family Theatre Adaptations of Classic Stories at Virginia Stage Company

This event, presented by the Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk, VA, featured performances of Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev, adapted for the stage by the internationally recognized CORE Theatre Ensemble and performed by the U.S. Army TRADOC Woodwind Ensemble; and The Selfish Giant, based on a story by Oscar Wilde and adapted for the stage by Ron Newman. Tamika Butler, Master Sergeant, USAF, Delaware National Guard, and Rashonda Fennell, Senior Airman, USAF, Langley AFB were featured speakers.

Festival of New Plays Weekend Honored Military Playwriting Program and Blue Star Theatres

Sarasota Festival of New Plays Weekend featured a series of readings of award-winning plays by young writers at Florida Studio Theatre. This series included a reading of TV Time Machine, a play from the Military Program at Sigsbee Elementary, as part of the WRITE A PLAY (WAP) program, an in-school arts initiative designed to inspire students to be creative and to write plays. An awards ceremony presented a 2014 WAP Recognition Award to Blue Star Families and TCG for the Blue Star Theatres Program, as well as a panel on “The State of New Plays in America” with speaker Teresa Eyring, executive director, TCG.

The Wilma Theater Honored Paula Vogel and Blue Star Theatres

Blue Star Theatres Showcase Educational Programs for Members of the Military and Families

TCG Announces Blue Star Theatres Expansion with a Featured Performance

At Arena Stage, TCG announced that its Blue Star Theatres program had expanded to eighty-five member theatres. This was announced in conjunction with a reading of a scene from ReEntry, a docudrama about returning veterans, written by Emily Ackerman and KJ Sanchez, featuring actor Larry Mitchell.

Blue Star Theatres Presents Program at League of Resident Theatres Conference

At the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) conference, TCG announced the participation of 57 theatres which have now joined the Blue Star Theatres program. TCG also announced that Blue Star Theatres will continue to build on the work already occurring at many theatres nationwide, including: playwriting classes to empower creative expression for veterans, community discussions on plays whose themes resonate with military families, free or discounted ticket programs, job postings and casting notices on military bases, and more.

TCG and Blue Star Families Launched Blue Star Theatres at Trinity Rep

On September 28, 2012 a press conference was held at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI, to launch the Blue Star Theatres program. At launch there were twenty-two member theatres which had signed up to participate in this program. This event featured Teresa Eyring, executive director, TCG; Michael Gennaro, executive director, Trinity Repertory Company; Rocco Landesman, chairman, National Endowment for the Arts; The Adjutant General of Rhode Island, Major General Kevin McBride; Senator Jack Reed (D-RI); Mark Smith, executive director, Blue Star Families; Dennis White, president and CEO, MetLife Foundation; and Michelle Faulkner, Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOS) Ombudsman, Naval Station Newport.
