Since its founding, the not-for-profit professional theatre field has been defined by risk, both financial and artistic, and by the leaders who have bravely navigated their theatres through the ebb and flow. Yet lately, it’s apparent that our field may be facing a more significant sea change, and for some of us, that may mean it’s time to rock the boat. Can our business model stay afloat during a generational shift in leadership and a (r)evolution in the relationship with our audiences and communities? How can trustees help steer their theatres through uncertain waters, to not just survive, but thrive? From November 10-12 in New York City, trustees and theatre leaders will explore these questions at the 2017 Fall Forum on Governance: Turning the Tide. Attendees will engage with thought leaders and hear case studies from peers on three main tracks: managing successful leadership transitions; sharing new strategies in audience engagement and community development; and rethinking the traditional business models of our field. From visionary conversations about radical philanthropy to tool kits for succession planning, participants will walk away with new governance strategies and tactics to turn the tide and help their theatres flourish.
