This collection of solo performance texts was a labor of love for the book’s editor, noted theatre director Jo Bonney who has worked with some of the best-known solo artists like Eric Bogosian, Danny Hoch and Anna Deavere Smith, as well playwrights Lynn Nottage, Diana Son and Neil LaBute, among others. Bonney worked closely with many of the artists in this volume to carefully select and finalize each piece, commenting that solo performance is “an art form we’ve all helped create simply by bearing witness to it.” And Bonney witnessed quite a bit of the idiosyncratic, boundary-breaking performance in the time since she arrived in New York in 1979.
Extreme Exposure includes work from 42 artists including Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Lenny Bruce, Laurie Anderson, Whoppi Goldberg, John Leguizamo, Dael Orlandersmith, Lily Tomlin, Andy Kaufman and Lisa Kron, and each piece is introduced by a contemporary – whether a scholar, critic, producer, director or other artist – who sets the context for the individual’s work. Each solo artist is – at the most basic level – a storyteller, and this collection is an evocative glimpse into the rich and wide-ranging history of the form.
