New American Musical, The
Composer and lyricist Jonathan Larsen died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm ten days before his 36th birthday and just one day before the first performance of Rent at the New York Theatre Workshop. Larsen’s groundbreaking work went on to win Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Musical, and garnered the 1996 Pulitzer Prize. Shortly after his death, Larsen’s family started a foundation in his honor to support the work of young composers and writers. Rent has been performed in countless productions worldwide and after closing on Broadway in 2008, the immensely popular musical is back in New York, playing Off-Broadway. Rent, along with Floyd Collins by Adam Guettel and Tina Landau, Parade by Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry, The Wild Party by Michael John LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe, forms the anthology of new musical theatre work edited by Wiley Hausam.
