This mock-documentary play puts playwright David Henry Hwang center stage: dramatizing the controversy over color-blind casting for Miss Saigon and the racially motivated federal investigation of his own father, Hwang explores Asian identity and the ever-changing definition of what it is to be an American. A finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize, the TCG edition includes an introduction by Frank Rich who declares Hwang “among the quintessential American playwrights, period, of his time.”
TCG first published Hwang in December 1980 with an edition of FOB in Plays in Process, a subscription-based script circulation series of new works sent to theatre professionals. FOB was originally produced in Hwang’s dorm at Stanford University in March 1979 and had its professional premiere at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in June 1980 in a production featuring John Lone and directed by Mako.
